Information technology is changing the way companies achieve their goals, and the pace of innovation helps them go a step further – to digital transformation. In today’s world of rapidly changing competitive landscapes, businesses need to create and adopt new processes, new behaviors, and new tools just to keep up with what’s going on around them. Digitization is the latest trend – the use of paper forms is decreasing, communication has become instant, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.
What exactly does digital transformation mean for your company?
Digital technologies are accelerators of innovation. They can improve efficiency, launch new products and services, enable new business models and blur the boundaries between industries.
Developing customer needs and expectations pose challenges to even the most agile companies to keep up with the digital age. To survive, companies must constantly innovate and transform. Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of business, fundamentally changing the way you do business and delivering value to end customers. It is also a cultural change that requires organizations to constantly challenge the status quo, experiment and overcome failure.
Digital transformation is both a challenge and a journey, and self-assessment is a necessary starting point for this and any other journey. It is a valuable tool that provides some insights in terms of the area to focus on, but is also important for initiating a self-assessment of a company’s current capabilities. It brings a company more efficient use of resources, more efficient management and reduction of operating costs.

Industry 4.0 and the inTERract 4.0 project
As part of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), organizations and companies have placed their digital transformation at the very top of their strategic agenda. Industry 4.0 deals with connecting cyber and physical systems (CPS) in an industrial environment. CPS bridges the physical and digital world and facilitates the collection of digital data from physical devices and processes (e.g., maintenance data from equipment and quality data from production lines), as well as the use of this data for automation and optimization. To this end, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies are used to collect and process large-scale high-speed streams, while at the same time automating field operations and supply chain processes. The digital transformation in the era of Industry 4.0 will improve the competitiveness of industrial organizations, while at the same time increasing their ability to make optimal decisions.
The chance for the maximum benefits of Industry 4.0 lies in the fact that the digital economy does not require large investments in plants, infrastructure and raw materials, because the modern economy operates on the principles of intangible assets, data and information, ideas and knowledge.
The project of cross-border cooperation Interreg IPA CBC Italy-Albania-Montenegro inTERact 4.0, deals with issues of digitalization, industry 4.0 and modernization of SMEs.
The main product of the inTERact 4.0 project will be the development of Development Guidelines for companies in need of growth based on faster and more efficient organization of resources and the creation of new values and business models that meet the needs of consumers. The project also developed Consolidation Guidelines for companies that must strengthen their market position before using fourth-generation technologies to gain a competitive advantage.
Fourth generation technology implies the effective combination of theory and practical application of knowledge in the information environment, while the future of business education and business success is in systemic education for the digital economy. Project activities are aimed at creating a business environment that is in the service of digital innovation, strengthening the education system, providing support to entrepreneurial companies in the initial and growth phase, strengthening industries with potential for the highest growth and launching public dialogue on the benefits of digital transformation. Technologies enable companies to distribute their product easier, faster and at lower costs to a growing number of users.
